22 comments:

  1. There was one Noble Man in Mahabharatha who was following the essence of Srimad Bhagvath Gita even before Lord Krishna taught Arjuna'
"Doing ones own duty dispaassinately-with out attaching any sentiments" "Sacificing the fruits -of the good deeds to God!

    Who was that Great Man?

  2. Reduce Your Wants

Constantly discriminate between the Preya-Marga and the Sreya-Marga,
the Pleasant Path and the Good Path. You will have to do this again
and again every time the mind tempts you to follow the ways of the
world, to imitate others. This desire to imitate others is
exceedingly powerful and overpowers even a wise man. Worry not about
finding money to buy a scooter (when you have no need for a scooter)
just because all your friends come on scooters. Do not bother about
how to send your son to the States only because your neighbors have
sent their kids to California and Cambridge. Keep away from temptations
of all sorts. Do not walk into places of temptation and then
struggle to resist temptation. It will tax your will unnecessarily.
Even if you succeed in resisting the temptation, it may leave a
craving in the mind. Craving induces restlessness.

Do not multiply your wants and then feel like a beggar. Reduce your
wants and feel like a king. Why should you enter a cloth shop and
see many varieties presented before your eyes when you have enough
clothing at home? Either you will buy unnecessary things. Or feel
sad, "Oh, I don't have this. Ah, how I wish I could buy that!" Peace
of mind and material greed are incompatibles. They do not go
    together. Make your choice.

Reduce your wants to the barest minimum consistent with your general
external activities. The fewer the wants and possessions the greater
the peace of mind. Possession gives pain. The point is so obvious
that it needs no explanation. Hire a taxi rather than own a car.
Live in a rented flat rather than possess your own house.

Most of us suffer, not for want of right knowledge or wisdom, but
for want of exercise of that wisdom in our daily life. If you want
peace of mind, at once stop doing all those things which you know
you should not do. And, equally important, start doing all those
things which you know you should do. This will set you on the right
track, and when you are on the right track, God's Grace will flow
into your life and make it more and more sublime. You will gain
peace of mind and radiate peace all around you. Faith has to be
exercised. Love has to be exercised. Selflessness has to be
exercised. Charity has to be practiced. Dispassion has to be
practiced. Devotion has to be cultivated. These qualities, these
virtues do not arise, in you over night. They have to be assiduously
cultivated before they can become a natural, a habitual, an integral
    part of your being.

  7. UZIR BEG
    --------------
The Culture of Orissa, Jagannath Culture, is based on the non-sectarian ideology that welcomes every religious and non-religious believer to its fold to receive the blessings of Lord Jagannath. Salbeg, though Muslim by birth, is the brightest star of the Orissan sky who enlightened the Orissan society by his devotional bhajanas, jananas and chaupadis. In this 21st Century, he is still being reckoned as one of the brightest literary figures of Orissa.
There are certain other contemporary literary figures who were unfortunately forgotten in our society, but who deserve special and renewed attention. One such Bhakti poet is Uzir Beg. In this paper it is my humble attempt to rekindle the life and work of Uzir Beg, a forgotten Bhakti poet of Orissa.
Uzir Beg had written a few devotional bhajanas in reverence of Lord Krishna. His writing is simple and melodious, and can touch the heart of every human, irrespective of their religious beliefs. His anthology on Lord Krishna is very famous, and in current stressful life it can give solace to mankind.
His great poem, Nanda Utsava, is an immortal one, based on Lord Krishna's Supernatural love, touching the emotion of an un-emotive soul. Nanda Utsava or Gopalila is full of love, emotion and literary etymology centered round Lord Krishna. The performance of Nanda Utsava has long been maintained as a tradition in a locality named Aarasa. Here, the spectator cannot experience the modern light decorations on a raised platform; rather, it has its own uniqueness in the old tradition of a simple folk festival.
God belongs to all mankind, but to achieve their own narrow goals, men divided God. God never differentiates men or the basis of belief, but rather takes all mankind as his own creation. In this way Lord Ram was born in Tretaya Yuga, Lord Krishna in Dwapara Yuga, and in course of time in different yugas, Buddha, Jesus, and Prophet Mohammed were born in order to maintain peace and harmony on this earth. Poet Uzir Beg understood the finer meaning of these religious preachers. He had written his work Nanda Utsava in simple countryside Oriya language to disseminate his view on Lord Krishna to all. He expressed his feeling of supernatural and cosmic love by writing many heart bubbling works, like Sita Banabas, Rama Banabas, Bhakta Sudama and Babru Bahana or Khudrukuni Brata Katha.
Uzir Beg was born in 1869 A.D. at Barua Haripur village, in the district of Jajpur, into a Sunni Muslim Family. [1] Sometimes he has been referred as the son of a Mughal Father and Brahmin (Hindu) Mother. [2] In course of time, Beg's family migrated to the village Badataela of Kanika Principality. His father served as a bodyguard of Kanika Raja.
Here, young Uzir experienced the hardship of the common men. He typically compared King Kansa's exploitation during Lord Krishna's period with the misery of Kanika. What he experienced was the suffering in Kanika, so, he reproduced it in his writings. His love and devotion to Lord Krishna and Krishna Gopalila had changed the emotive mind of Uzir Beg. His famous work, Nanda Utsava, is a meagre prose dialogue, although he himself was a legendary actor and musician. He used melodious music for the scene as it required. Sometimes he himself played the role of Nanda in Nanda Utsava. In the same play he used tuneful songs in which emotion, ridicule, fear, love and anger were fancifully experienced by the spectators.

  8. (continued from above)

Uzir Beg was an acclaimed figure in the writings of Bhakti poems in Orissa. He is also known as the Jaban Kabi. He was also a silent reformer. It is believed that in 1926 A.D., Nanda Utsava was first performed at Aarasa village with the band of a cultural upholder. Since then this tradition has continued till now at the same village. [3] K.C. Behera, in his book Oriya Sahitya [4] regarding Islami Prabhaba, has also outlined the performance of Nanda Utsava in Aarasa village till now.

Uzir Beg's devotion for Lord Krishna can be better illustrated in his following bhajana:

    Krushna Pujana Kar
    Krushna Bhajan Kar
    Kebal gati mukti dwara
    Bhane Beg Uzir
    Mu Murkha durachar
    Kebal naam matra saar

Worship and recite in praise of Lord Krishna. He can only make you free from this worldly life.

Thus, although Uzir Beg is forgotten in the literary arena of Orissa, his legendary works are still performed in villages like Aali, Baraha, Chandbali, Kanika, Kayama and Rajnagar.

  9. The Sadhaka (spiritual aspirant) who wants to attain Shanti (peace) has to constantly practise a virtuous life, overcoming all the initial obstacles. Shanti is like a mountain rock. It can stand up against the continuous floods of temptation from evil. This Prashanti (supreme peace) need not be sought anywhere outside. It emanates from the Antahkarana (inner self) itself.

  11. Dog and the Cod Liver Oil

A man began to give large doses of cod-liver oil to his Doberman because he had been told that the stuff was good for dogs. Each day he would hold the head of the protesting dog between his knees, force its jaws open, and pour the liquid down its throat.

One day the dog broke loose and spilled the oil on the floor. Then to the man's great surprise, it returned to lick the spoon. That is when he discovered that what the dog had been fighting was not the oil, but his method of administering it.

  12. When hardships overwhelm you, know that it is the consequence of your own past deeds. Do not blame the Lord and develop a grouse against Him. Do not pay heed to this trouble or take it as such. Engage yourself in the service of others and in deeds of merit. Continue relying on the Name of the Lord as support. That is the sign of the wise. To strengthen this attitude, peace is a great source of help. Basking in the happiness born of good deeds you do, you should not be tempted to commit deeds of evil. You should strive to perform even more meritorious deeds. Then you can make your lives holier and purer and reach the Divine Presence. Such striving is the sign of the highest character

  13. KAMBA RAMAYANAM
    -----------------------------------------------
Ramavataram, popularly referred to as Kamba Ramayanam is a Tamil epic written by the poet Kamban during the 12th century. Based on Valmiki's Ramayana, the original epic Ramayana in Sanskrit, the story describes the life of King Rama of Ayodhya. However, Ramavatharam is different from the Sanksrit original in many aspects - both in spiritual concepts and in the specifics of the story line.

Kamban wrote his epic under the patronage of Thiruvennai Nallur Sadayappa Vallal, a local chieftain. As a mark of respect for his patron, Kamban mentions his name once in every 1,000 verses.

The Ramavataram is quite well known, both in the Tamil literary world and throughout India, where it is appreciated for the color of the poems and for the religious sentiment.

The book is divided into six chapters, called Kandam:

    Bala Kandam (Chapter: Childhood)
    Ayodhya Kandam (Chapter: Ayodhya)
    Aranya Kandam (Chapter: Forest)
    Kishkinta Kandam (Chapter: Kishkintha)
    Sundara Kandam (Chapter: Beautiful)
    Yutha Kandam (Chapter: War)
The Kandams are further divided into 123 sections, called Padalam. These 123 sections contain approximately 12,000 verses of the epic.

As with many historic compilations, it is very difficult to discard the interpolations and addendum which have been added over a period of time to the original manuscript. This task was taken up a committee of scholars, collectively known as the Kamban Kazhagam (Kamban Academy), headed by Prof. T P Meenakshi Sundaram. The compilation published by this committee in 1976 is what is used as the standard today.

    Literary Significance

Kamban's use of Virutham (tempo) and Santham (tune) in various verses is effective in bringing out the human emotion and mood setting for storytelling. He achieves the Virutham and Santham by effective choice of words.

To date, this epic is read by many Hindus during prayers. In some households the entire epic is read once during the Tamil Month of Aadi. It is also read in Hindu temples and other religious associations.

This epic is considered to be living proof that the worship of Lord Rama started in Tamil Nadu. On many occasions, Kambar talks about surrendering to Rama, who is a manifestation of Vishnu Himself.
The Sundara Kandam chapter is considered quite auspicious and is the most popular. It talks about the hardships faced by the main characters in the epic, their practice of restraint, and hopes for a better tomorrow.
Tamil legend has it that the entire Ramavataram was written in one night by Ganesha, who is said to have written the poems that Kambar dictated to him during the night, as Kambar procrastinated the work till the day before the deadline set by the King.

  15. Do not take life's experiences too seriously. Above all, do not let them hurt you, for in reality they are nothing but dream experiences. ....If circumstances are bad and you have to bear them, do not make them a part of yourself. Play your part in life, but never forget it is only a role. What you lose in the world will not be a loss to your soul. Trust in God and destroy fear, which paralyzes all efforts to succeed and attracts the very thing you fear.

  16. THE DONKEY IN THE WELL
One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.yours too… Finally he decided since the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway, it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. So, the farmer invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed shovels, and began to shovel dirt into the well.

All the other farm animals were very upset about this, because the donkey was their friend. But they discovered there was nothing they could do to help him. At first, when the donkey realized what was happening, he cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well, and was astonished at what he saw.

With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off, and take a step up on the dirt as it piled up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well, and trotted off!

MORAL: Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. But each trouble can be a stepping stone. What happens to you isn't nearly as important as how you react to it. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not giving up!

Shake it off, and take a step up!
